In part one of this article series I spoke about how to begin your sales letter. You need a strong headline, warm and friendly salutation and a background color that is going to entice your reader to stay on your website and read on. However, now I’d like to address how to begin the opening paragraph of your sales letter.

Now for most of my opening paragraphs, I like to start mine off with a very short sentence or just a word like, “Are you frustrated?” or “Frustrated? Followed by, “Not making money online really sucks. Believe me, I know it. I’ve been there…but you came to the right place…” – and continue on from there. The most effective way to open the sales letter is to get straight to the point and the point is “What’s in it for me?” Where “me” represents your potential customer, not you. So, address your reader by telling them what’s in it for them. If you can give them this information right away, they’ll listen more intently to what you have to say and be encouraged to read on.

One thing to consider when writing your sales letter is you don’t want to write too much and be too wordy as this will scare off your reader. They don’t want to be bombarded with too much writing all at once because you can quickly turn them off. So, break it up into smaller bite sized sections. Remember, grammar is not that important in the game of online sales letters. Writing the way that you’d speak to a friend is extremely important. Sales talk doesn’t work. If you look at my sales letters, you’ll realize that.

Another thing you don’t want to do is pressure the reader too early to place an order. I would instead, move your offer down and add in some testimonials. Consider adding some free bonuses if you have them and lastly your guarantee. You really need to build your story to draw on people’s emotions of frustration, greed, etc. It’s really important that you work in a flow that makes sense, that draws the reader in so that they keep on reading until they have this burning desire to buy.

A very important thing is to also establish credibility. In other words, what gives you the right to let them know about this product or service? To establish this, one thing you could do is say, “I’ve studied under some great marketing minds or “I’ve studied some of the greatest internet marketing minds out there and I came to the conclusion that this information is tried and true.” Something like that. You want to make sure that you give them a reason why your claims should be true and why they should believe you at all. You can also add credibility to your claims by stating famous people that you might’ve helped or special cases that you might’ve worked on. Give examples such as these as it will help you produce a much stronger sales letter that will result in more sales.

So, try to gain credibility by backing up your story with proof. In part three of this article series I’ll address the importance of testimonials. Testimonials are strong and can help you garner more sales. You’ll also discover how to end your sales letter with a bang – a bang that entices your reader to buy.

If you have reached the milestone of actually creating a sales letter, I congratulate you for your effort simply because it’s a huge step – much greater than most people would ever venture into. However, it’s not that simple to do. But the questions remain… how good is your sales letter? Is it written well enough to make any sales? I have been asked by my students on numerous occasions to critique their letters and I usually identify very common mistakes. One of the first things that really pops out to the reader is the background color. You want to choose something that isn’t too overpowering so as to focus people’s attention away from what they are reading. Most online marketers choose a dark blue or white for their backgrounds while others may choose branded designs. Testing will prove what works best.

The next thing a readers eyes are drawn to is your headline. Here is an example of what I consider a poor headline, “So you want to make money with internet marketing but you don’t know how to start? Well, now you can have your roadmap.” I’m not big on asking questions in headlines. A lot of people like to do it that way, but I would probably change it to say something like, “Discover how you can make money online with a roadmap to get you started immediately”. Then underneath it, “This is a step-by-step guide for you to start making money quickly and easily on line.”

The problem I have with asking questions in a headline is if you already know that the answer to the question is yes, then you don’t even have to ask the question. A lot of times I also use a subhead line. The sub headline supports and helps to expand the headline. It gives the prospects more reasons to continue reading.

Now, when you start off your letter with a salutation, don’t just merely say something like “Hi”. When we’re writing to our friends, we’re not going to say “Hi.” We’re going to say, “Hi, John” However, if you don’t know who’s landing on your sales page, and you personally don’t know your visitor, you probably want to say, “Dear Friend” or in this example, “Dear Aspiring Internet Marketer” or “Dear Aspiring Online Money Maker.” Anything to that effect would be good. You basically want to present a warm and friendly salutation so that people feel that they are talking to a friend or talking to someone who truly cares. Warm and friendly always wins in the end.

In part two of this series of how to write a winning sales letter, I’m going to address what you need to write for your first paragraph to invite your reader to continue to read on.

The feeling of being overwhelmed when you’re first starting out online is absolutely understandable. There are marketers pulling at you every which way, business opportunities abound and your inbox is flooded with offers for the next best product to help you make money online. It can be confusing and overwhelming because you’re not sure which to choose since all of these “pitches” seem too good to be true. Unfortunately there are too many pitches for the average newbie to swallow. But if you focus on the most important aspects of your soon-to-be business, you can quickly start reaping the rewards of your efforts.

So, what do you do if you have chosen your niche and have some great ideas along with a wide selection of affiliate products to choose from in your market? You’ll need to choose from one of these to begin building a mailing list of potential customers. Your list will allow you to send email offers to your list so that you can begin to make sales. After all, you want to get into the business of making money online. And having a list to mail to is one of the best ways to do it.

If you’re uncomfortable with making pitches to your list, don’t worry it’s not that difficult. And you don’t have to make hard sells to your list either. You can set up an e-zine (electronic magazine) or giveaway a free report or e-book with your affiliate links embedded in the reports/e-books suggesting products. This technique is very effective because you’re not making a hard sell but you’re offering helpful information through your report and/or ebook. Also, your list will respond favorably to this type of offer. Free giveaways with useful information are often never refused – regardless of your market.

So, you’re basically getting people to trade their name and email address for your free newsletter, e-course, e-book or report offer.

One thing that’s essential to know is that when you’re purchasing your domain and if you plan to have a newsletter, you should also purchase a domain for your newsletter as well. So, let’s say you chose to just create a newsletter. It’s essential to purchase the domain name for your newsletter as well as it not only helps brand your website but it also protects your brand.

Taking the time to set up your domain, hosting and autoresponder sequences is fairly simple. Most companies provide step-by-step tutorials to walk you through the process as you’re doing it. Take your time to learn how it’s done so you can duplicate the process again. But if you’re not up to doing it yourself, consider hiring an expert that can and will gladly do it for you. Article marketing is often the easiest way for a ‘newbie’ to get started making money online with affiliate products.  By writing two or three articles a day and submitting them to top directories, you can start building a significant amount of traffic to your sales page, site or blog – WHEN you do it the right way!  If you read on forums often, Ezine Articles is definitely tops.  But, is it the only article directory to which you should submit?  No way!  Articlesbase and GoArticles are two other top-ranking directories to which you should be sending your articles.

Why should you submit your articles to these other directories?  Not only will you get an increased amount of targeted traffic, the rules are slightly more relaxed at GoArticles and Articlesbase, which means that you can submit articles that may not be approved by Ezine.  Why would Ezine not accept an article?  They have very strict guidelines, and sometimes decline articles that they perceive to look too much like an advertisement.  Ezine Articles change their guidelines quite often, and submitting to other directories helps you get exposure without putting all of your eggs in one basket!

In part 2 of this article series titled: How to Start an Online Business with Little Money, I spoke about using a free software tool Nvu to build your website. I also spoke about the power of using articles to grow your business. Article marketing is one of the most powerful strategies you can use to grow your business and it doesn’t have to cost you a dime if you can write your articles yourself. So, what are the key components to writing a successful article? Well…

The 5 things you need to have in order to make your article viral are:

1. You’re going to need to have a benefit driven headline.

2. You’re going to need to have a summary that entices your reader to continue reading onwards.

3. You’re going to need to have strong body content.

4. You’re going to need to have a bio or resource box. Now, this bio or resource box is going be where you’re going to drive people back to your “opt-in page” so that you can capture them when they actually read your article. You can capture them and you can market to them over and over again using this strategy.

5. Lastly you’ll need your article keywords. So basically if you use an article directory website, there is going to be an area where you enter the keywords specifically related to your article? These keywords should be tightly targeted to the topic you are writing about. After all you’ll need are good keywords to gain traffic from the search engines. Let me explain how to specifically create your keywords.

Now, these are keywords that are not keywords already written inside your article. Let me explain… Let’s say you just wrote an article called “7 Ways to Escape Foreclosure.” Well, then you didn’t talk about “we buy houses” inside there. But somebody searches online for the keywords “we buy houses.” It might make sense to add those keywords to your list because it is possible for someone to use those keywords to find an article like yours that related to the terms/topic they are searching for information about. Finding your article would help them.

So, what happens is someone types in a keyword into the Google or Yahoo search engines for example, and if the keyword they typed in is a related keyword as what your article content is about, they’ll be able to find your article and thereby be lead to your website. How does this happen so quickly?

You also need to make sure that your article content ranges between 300 to 500 words. Although I’d suggest that 500 words is the maximum amount.

Your goal is going to be to get to ten articles written per week. You also want your article submissions to be done on a regular basis. If you notice, I’m submitting two articles a day.

So if you can get really good at just creating articles and driving people back to your website to sign up for your list, you’re heading in the right direction. In no time you’ll gain a list of loyal supporters who trust you and are willing to buy from you. But you need to focus on pampering that relationship with them. Let them get to know you and your business by offering unique, useful content with helpful tips they can use immediately. Then once you get them on there, then you want to start emailing them.

If you focus on generating as many articles as possible, you’ll get traffic in no time. But the key is to stay consistent and keep thinking with the end goal in mind. Take action now and reap the rewards later.
