Fulfillment of Your Physical Products – How I Do it and How You Can Too

Outsourcing to a fulfillment company is something we used to do for a little while, but don’t really do much of anymore. The last time we used a fulfillment company we ran into some issues with my newsletter. It was a fight over the paper. I was really upset because I told them I wanted a specific weight of paper. I didn’t want really, really thin and flimsy paper, but they went with the flimsy stuff to save some money and they didn’t tell me. So, I was appalled and left. However, other than that one incident, I never had any problems. But regardless, I just pulled it all back in-house. We currently do everything in-house.

When we first started and we weren’t selling much online, I was literally burning CD’s one at a time on my computer. My wife and I used to do that. Sometimes, it took us all night to burn CDs. Then one day we got to the point where we bought a printer. The printer produced 100 CD’s or DVD’s really quick and at around $1200 it was relatively cheap. The latest models of the printer will produce up to 500. We’ve been using it for years and have run a lot of stuff through it.. If you’re going to do fulfillment of CD’s or DVD’s, I would not whatsoever recommend having a machine that just burns the CDs and then having a machine that just burns the covers on them because there’s too many possible errors. Most people make the mistake of burning the wrong CD label on the wrong CD. So, what I prefer and suggest are the machines that’ll actually pick it up, burn the CD, print the label and then spit it out. That’s what I’ve got. When you look at the finished CD, whatever the label says is exactly what’s on there. There is no possibility of a mix up.

I actually enjoy doing some of the manual labor because I don’t often get the chance. When we have large runs of CDs of something like 5,000 copies, we outsource that out in big pops to a duplicator or replicator company. After they finish duplicating everything they send it to us in bulk, and then we actually put everything together and ship it out. I enjoy watching our office does that because then I can manage and watch the traffic flow of stuff going out the door. It always makes me feel good seeing that we’ve got a pile of stuff going out the door!. To me, that means money! So, I just really enjoy it. It’s wonderful seeing the boxes full of products. It helps put things in perspective and really see that people do really enjoy and appreciate what we’re doing.

I thought I’d share my experience to help place some perspective on things for those considering fulfillment for their own products. Hopefully my experience will help you with your decision.
