Dangers & Strategies You Need to Know About Getting Backlinks

There’s something you need to avoid with backlinks. Stay far away from doing reciprocal links. These are link exchanges where one website owner asks another website owner to trade links. The conversation goes something like this; “I’ll link to you, if you link to me”. That’s how it’s done. Avoid this tactic because if somebody links to you who has a poorly ranked site, that will hurt your ranking potential. I’d run away from this type of reciprocation. The other thing is there are link farms out there and there are directory link farms as well. You want to be very careful when you are doing that because when search engines identify a link farm, they pretty much turn off the ability to pass through the page rank, but that’s what you’re looking for here. Basically, search engines consider link farms to be bad neighborhoods. So, if you associate with them, then that bad reputation can rub off on you and your site can get penalized for linking to a bad neighborhood.

What about buying links? I wouldn’t really buy links or sell links, because actually you can get in trouble. I know that Google frowns on that whole marketplace of buying and selling links. Although a lot of people are doing it now, many of them are being penalized. What you’re really looking for is getting relevant and authority pages pointing to your site. In order to have this happen, there are a couple of things that you could do.

In terms of the linking factor, what carries the most weight? A link will carry more weight if you get a link from a completely different domain that has a higher page rank. Targeted keywords in the link text also help your rankings enormously. If you have keyword from relevant pages, or from pages that contain keywords or a keyword in the title from an authority page that’s been around for many years that can also help your rankings.

But remember, what you don’t want are links from poorly ranked sites where the keywords are not in the link text. This does not really carry that much weight. Neither do links from unrelated pages, from non-authority pages or from link farms. Try to avoid these types of sites at all costs and simply use the strategies given above to start seeing better results in your rankings and traffic numbers.
