Twitter is fast becoming one of the most popular social media sites. People are spreading the word about everything and anything in 140 characters or less. So, how can you make money with Twitter? Send a link with your welcome messages.

You probably already know that you should send a direct message to every new follower you get (and if you didn’t–you do now!).  But most marketers, for some reason, neglect to put a link in this message.

This link doesn’t have to be for a paid product.  In fact, it probably shouldn’t be.

What kind of link should you send?  That all depends on your niche.  In the IM niche, you shouldn’t get any complaints if you send a link to a valuable report or some other helpful product that others can download.

In other niches, you might simply want to encourage your followers to check out your blog, website, or even your Facebook profile.  Pay attention to how low- or high-key your niche acts on Twitter, and you’ll have a good idea what to send.

Invest in some auto-posting software.

Sites like Postlater.com and Socialoomph.com allow you to post to Twitter even when you’re asleep!  (You can also have custom “dripped content” posting software made for you at rentacoder.com.  You really don’t need this kind of solution until you have plenty of twitter accounts however.

Combine this with a newsfeed Tweeting service like Twitterfeed, and you have a winning combination.  Your newsfeed service will keep you listed in Twitter’s search engine and attract new followers, while your auto-posting software will take care of the actual monetization.

Gain Twitter followers by following others.

The first and perhaps easiest way to make money with Twitter is by sending keyword-focused traffic directly to your site.  It’s simple math–the more people who follow you, the more people who’ll click through to your site.

Keep in mind that the best way to get targeted followers is to go to search.twitter.com, look up people who are tweeting about your keywords, and follow those people.  After a few days, unfollow the ones that don’t follow you back.

You can use Twitter to drive ultra-targeted traffic to your site.

Send a direct message to thank the people who follow you back.  Then make sure you send out interesting, relevant Tweets.

These tweets can be news items or links to your blog (use the link shortener bit.ly for a link short enough to allow you to type the blog title into your tweet).  Do the same for new pages you add to your website, or new articles you publish at directories.

Can you can tweet affiliate links directly to your Twitter followers.

It’s not entirely unheard of to directly tweet affiliate links on your account.  You just want to be sure that it is a product you believe in 100%.  If you tweet links to junk products, you’ll quickly lose both readers and credibility.

Followers will begin to think that this looks, smells, and tastes like spam.  An example of when this may work is if a follower is looking for great web hosting, and you provide them with your masked link to a product that you truly believe in.

Of course, you can always lead people to your own products or landing pages in your tweets; particularly if the ones who follow you are in a niche or area closely related to your own and the blog or site you lead them to provides useful and valuable information.  This is a great benefit of Twitter – helping others in their own business and building your reputation by the value and knowledge you provide.  When you become known as an expert within your niche or industry, others will have a great interest in what you have to say.
